(1) In business, the value of having a
mentor is well established. Many companies also have internal mentorship
programmes so that young professionals in the company can learn from the
veterans in their midst. (2) Despite this acceptance of the necessity
of mentorship, creative mentorships are far harder to come by than seems
possible. Though India has had a long history of such mentoring, through the guru-shishya parampara prevalent in
the arts and crafts learning system, the dynamics of the system is heavily
dependent on the whims of the guru or the mentor. These people have ranged
from strict disciplinarians demanding complete subservience to others who are
lackadaisical and unmindful of their responsibilities. (3) To give this ancient tradition a modern
twist, the internationally famed watch making company, Rolex has initiated
the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Intransitive. The Geneva based firm seeks
out gifted young artists from around the world and brings them together with
established mentors and maestros in their field, for a year of creative
mentoring and collaboration on a one-to-one basis. So far, two Indian mentors
have been chosen to guide potential talent among the youth. The
internationally renowned sculptor Anish Kapoor and film maker Mira Nair are
the two Indians who are currently directing youngsters in their chosen
fields. Sadly, they have no Indian protégés so far. (4) The protégés for this scheme are
selected by international nominating companies and many of the duos for this
programme do not even come from the same continent, or have a common
language. This year's programme which culminated in Mexico City, included the
Swiss architect Peter Zumthor and a young Paraguan, Gloria Cabral. Though
both of them did not speak the same language, they were both engaged in work
on a tea chapel in South Korea. (5) When asked about her mentor, Gloria said
that a good mentor was someone who not only provided academic knowledge, but
also guided and inspired one to something which one might not even know, could
be done. Recipients from the previous years, too expressed similar thoughts.
Israeli director Tom Shoval said he had never even dreamt of getting a chance
to work with Oscar Award winning director Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu of
'Birdman' fame. He recalls how his mentor took him to the Canadian Rockies to
see firsthand the creative process behind his new film "The
Revenant." (6) Commenting on the experience Shoval
said: "The visit of the set of "The Revenant" has been the
best cinema school, because one could see how Alejandro builds a shot,
choreographs and moves all the elements and creates a complex and emotional
peak in every frame." (7) According to the company the aim behind
starting such a project was to fill the vacuum that exists in arts
philanthropy. Making it global and ensuring that the initiative was not
confined to one form of art, the company has been able to serve the arts
through many disciplines by encouraging various artists of different disciplines
to interact with each other. (8) Having selected the maestros, a global
search is now under way to find suitable protégés for them. Each mentor is
also given funds for travelling and other major expenses. Thus the new
initiative has become an exciting way of connecting the talented youth and
the seasoned practitioner through an interactive platform. |

Exploring Demographics in the US 1) Well before
COVID-19 shut down, Knight Foundation commissioned Urban Institute to explore
a key question: what attaches people to
the places where they live? Urban Institute, in partnership with the firm
SSRS, surveyed over 11,000 Americans.
This is because understanding what ties residents to their community
may be very important in a post-pandemic America.
2) There are
many things about people’s perceptions and expectations of their metro areas
that foster strong feelings of attachment, and actions that demonstrate it.
Nonetheless, we must not ignore that the ways that people experience and
express attachment to their communities are strongly shaped by demographic
differences. People of different generations attach to their communities
in distinctive ways. Let us first understand different generations and their
names.
3) Silents, Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y, and Gen Z
Explained (2019 Data)
4) People of
different generations attach to their communities in distinctive ways.
The findings revealed the most salient and consistent trends emerging around
different generations. The Community Ties Survey asked respondents on a
5-point scale, the analysis of which shows that people of different
generations attach to their communities in very distinctive ways (Figure
5.1). Bridging
social capital is a type of social
capital that describes connections
that link people across a cleavage that typically divides society (such as
race, or class, or religion). It is associations that ‘bridge’ between communities, groups,
or organisations. 5) Demographic differences do
matter. Older generations tend to express higher satisfaction with their
metro area and identify more with the local culture and lifestyle. We
consistently see differences in both attachment sentiments and behaviors
across generations. The most established generations, such as the Silent
Generation and the Baby Boomers, tend to feel more satisfied, identify more
with the lifestyle/culture of their metro area, and have stronger
inclinations to stay in their community than other generations. Boomers and
Generation Xers, in midlife, stand out for their relatively high levels of
community investment. Meanwhile, Millennials, Latchkey and Generation Z have
significantly higher social bridging capital across class, race and language
and are the most likely to be natives of the metro area where they live,
perhaps due to the diversity of this generation and their
life stages. |

Antarctica, because of her simple ecosystem
and lack of biodiversity, is the perfect place to study how little changes in
the environment can have big repercussions. Take the microscopic phytoplankton
– those grasses of the sea that nourish and sustain the entire Southern
Ocean’s food chain. These single-celled plants use the sun’s energy to
assimilate carbon and synthesise organic compounds in that wondrous and most
important of processes called photosynthesis. Scientists warn that a further
depletion in the ozone layer will affect the activities of phytoplankton,
which in turn will affect the lives of marine animals and birds of the
region, and the global carbon cycle. |
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
(i) Why is Antarctica the perfect place to study the impact of climate
change? (ii) How is the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon affected by a
depletion in the Ozone layer? a) Phytoplankton are affected by ultraviolet rays, thus reducing
their ability to absorb carbon. b) A warmer ocean cannot absorb carbon from
the atmosphere. c) Ultraviolet rays affect the ability of the
ocean to absorb carbon. d) A warmer ocean tends to release methane
gas from its depths. (iii) According to the extract,
The Southern Ocean’s food chain is dependent on the abundance of which
organism listed below: a) seals b) whales c) fish d) phytoplankton (iv) State whether the following statement is TRUE or FALSE: Photosynthesis is a

Food is more
important for survival than an identity. “If at the end of the day we can
feed our families and go to bed without an aching stomach, we would rather
live here than in the fields that gave us no grain,” say a group of women in
tattered saris when I ask them why they left their beautiful land of green
fields and rivers. Wherever they find food, they pitch their tents that
become transit homes. Children grow up in them, becoming partners in
survival. And survival in Seemapuri means rag-picking. Through the years, it
has acquired the proportions of a fine art. Garbage to them is gold. It is
their daily bread, a roof over their heads, even if it is a leaking roof. But
for a child it is even more. |

lines? a) the peasants of Champaran b) the rag pickers of Seemapuri c) the natives of Bangladesh d) the inhabitants of a slum (ii) What does the line ‘Food is

gold by them? a) rag picking helps them to earn some money helping
