Spiders and Caterpillars - Macro Photography of Insects

A Green Swallowtail Caterpillar

It is surprising how fulfilling Macro-photography can be especially when it throws out results that are surreal! While the challenges might be daunting, patience and persistence pay off. One might not need expensive lenses to take pot-shot of those critters hiding in the bushes, in fact, I use a Canon kit lens (EFS-18-55 mm) on my DSLRs to take my Macro Photographs.

The secret behind getting good photographs is having a steady hand. I don't like lugging a tripod as it restricts your movement. Getting as close as possible to the insect. Using a fill-in flash might become a necessity, especially when the bug is hiding in the branches. I use an ISO setting of 100 to 400, an f-stop number of 6.3 to 25 (depending on the light) and a shutter speed of 1/160 - 1/200. For the focus setting I use the center focus.

Spiders are quite tricky to photograph as they are constantly on the move. While a few of the larger spiders might be a bit sluggish, the smaller ones, like the jumping spiders are very active. Some of the spiders I have photographed turn out to be very shy and camera-conscious. It takes a lot of patience on the part of the photographer to take a decent photograph of spiders.

A female Telamonia spider emerges from her nest of eggs

The three photographs above are of a female jumping spider known by its scientific name as Telamonia dimidiata. This spider rose to fame because of an internet hoax that claimed that it lurked under toilet seats waiting to attack the person. In reality, it is a very shy insect.

The three photographs posted above are those of a spider better known by its Scientific name Epocilla aurantiaca. This spider has red and white horizontal stripes on its back. It is a jumping spider that leap from one branch to another one in a split second.

Caterpillars, however, are easier to photograph because most of them are sluggish. Being longer than spiders, Caterpillars, however, pose a challenge because it might be a little difficult to get a sharp focus on the rest of the body, especially as I like to focus on the eyes. Believe, me, you will fail to identify the real eyes of the Caterpillar because the eyes that you see on top of the head of the insect are not real ones, they are probably meant to deceive predators.

The photograph posted above is that of a caterpillar’s head and it sure looks weird, as if that of an alien creature from outer space. The actual eyes of the caterpillar are closer down near the orange coloured spikes that might be part of its mouth. The two spikes on either side of its head, antennae, in all probability make the creature look more unique.

Prose Extract Based Questions For The Rattrap - As Per The Latest CBSE Specs

Read the following extracts and answer the questions that follow.

1. No one can imagine how sad and monotonous life can appear to such a vagabond, who plods along the road, left to his own meditations. But one day this man had fallen into a line of thought, which really seemed to him entertaining. He had naturally been thinking of his rattraps when suddenly he was struck by the idea that the whole world about him-the whole world with its lands and seas, its cities and villages- was nothing but a big rattrap. It had never existed for any other purpose than to set baits for people. It offered riches and joys, shelter and food, heat and clothing, exactly as the rattrap offered cheese and pork, and as soon as anyone let himself be tempted to touch the bait, it closed in on him, and then everything came to an end.

   i. The use of the word 'plods' suggests that the peddler leads a very ______________life.

He tried , to be sure, to walk in a definite direction, but the paths twisted back and forth so strangely! He walked and walked without coming to the end of the wood, and finally, he realised that he had only been walking around in the same part of the forest. All at once he recalled his thoughts about the world and the rattrap. Now his turn had come. He had let himself be fooled by a bait and had been caught.

The Church of the Epiphany, Civil Lines, Gurgaon Conducts a Confirmation Service

The Confirmation Service for 19 candidates was led by The Rt. Revd. Dr. Paul Swaroop on Sunday the 13th of August, 2023. The pews Church of the Epiphany at Civil Lines, Gurgaon were filled with parishioners and guests.

The Sunday School children did their best to make the occasion very special. Their presentation was simply exceptional. A lot of credit goes to the Sunday School teachers who worked very hard with these little ones!

One could see the excitement and anxiousness on the faces of the candidates, and the parents seemed to be proud to see their wards stand at the altar, fully communicant church members. My niece was among the candidates who were confirmed that day.

The service was well conducted and everything fitted nicely in the schedule under the guidance of the Presbyter in Charge, Revd. Daman Rodgers, members of the Pastorate Committee members of the Youth Fellowship, and the Sunday School Teachers. The music was provided by Timothy, Colonel I.B. Thomas and Mr. Sircar. The service ended with the singing of the National Anthem.

Telamonia dimidiata - The Spider that fuelled a hoax

It was pleasantly surprising to know that a spider I recently photographed in school was once famous for being associated with an email hoax in 1999. The email claimed that it was a fatal spider found lurking under toilet seats in North Florida! The story gained traction as time passed with many anxious people literally on the edge of their seats.

A very shy spider, indeed!

Fortunately, these stories are fabricated and the two-striped spider isn't dangerous to humans at all. When I tried to photograph it, it seemed to be a shy creature that tried to avoid the lens of my camera. It kept hiding from me by getting below the leaf and when I looked below, it would step onto the top of the leaf. This went on for some time until fed up with my stubbornness it leapt away.

I am sharing photographs that I took of the male Telemonia dimidiata. The male is darker than its female counterpart. The female is light yellowish in colour with red rings surrounding its eyes while the male, as you can see has red hair around its eyes and part of the head too! This spider is also native to India.

Uncertain Times - A poem

The quiet before the storm approaches,
Where deserted roads greet the eyes.
Long stretches lead into the distance,
With bated breath, we wait in suspense.

We don’t know what tomorrow brings,
But prepared we must be for the wings
Of change beat in the distance, storms
Approach, we fight or flee these things!

Perhaps a heavy rain will drown the fog
And the uncertainty drives away the bug
And fill the roads with people who hug
Each other  (Rather have a hug, not a bug!).

A light wind blows, refreshing and cool.
It drives away the dark clouds and the
Suspense, the promise of a sweet sleep,
Where we dream of paradise and peace.

A patch opens in the dark sky,
 Stars peep through twinkling.
A host in white descends on the
Roads, building a chorus so loud!

It drives away the beast lurking on
The edge of the road, making a stand.
A whispering is heard of hope and joy
Even as a bright beam stabs the gloom.

The beast lurking on the edge of the road
Trembles with fright, and with a whimper
Bounds away into the distance, the quiet
Is now replaced with a loud chorus of joy.
